What am I doing with my life?

“What am I doing with my life?” someone moaned to me this week. I’m hearing this phrase a lot lately, probably because I’m in my 20s and these are the sorts of things our generation is fixated about. I hear it from an entrepreneur who failed at a startup, a college student, an MBA grad, a person with a stable job in a toxic environment and I could go on…

We feel as though we carry the weight of the world on our shoulders with every decision we make, that our jobs define who we are, and have an expectation that life should progress linearly. Only with hindsight will you realize this is a load of bullshizz.

From one millennial to another, I offer my career trajectory as a source of comfort (or maybe what not to do? Whatever helps):

“All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without the benefit of experience”- Henry Miller

Guess what? I’m fine. I’m more than fine, I’ve got experiences filled with success, failure, loss, fear, and wanderlust. I would never want to trade them for the conventional route. I am not sure what’s next and I like it that way, I am where I am meant to be for now.

So if you’re moaning, “What am I doing with my life?”. Congratulations, you’re about to become an interesting person. Turn the burden of choice into a gift of exploration, I promise it will be amazing. It is not an easy path, it is filled with vulnerability and second-guessing yourself but you’ll get through it, we all do.
